A Comprehensive Guide to MEI (Microempreendedor Individual) in Brazil: Benefits and Requirements

As a small business owner in Brazil, registering as a Microempreendedor Individual (MEI) can provide you with a simple and affordable way to formalize your business and gain access to a range of benefits and protections. In this post, we’ll provide a comprehensive guide to MEI in Brazil and cover the essential information you need to know.

What is MEI?

MEI, or Microempreendedor Individual, is a simplified and low-cost business registration option for small business owners in Brazil. MEI was created by the Brazilian government to help small business owners formalize their businesses, gain access to benefits, and simplify tax processes.

Benefits of MEI

Registering as an MEI offers several benefits for small business owners in Brazil, including:

  1. Simplified Registration: MEI registration is quick, easy, and low-cost, allowing small business owners to easily formalize their operations.
  2. Tax Benefits: MEI business owners are exempt from federal, state, and municipal taxes, with the exception of the monthly MEI tax.
  3. Social Security Benefits: MEI business owners are eligible for social security benefits, including retirement, disability, and survivor benefits.
  4. Business Banking: MEI business owners can open a business bank account and access business credit.
  5. E-Invoicing System: As of January 2023, MEI business owners are required to issue their service invoices from the NFS-e system, which is a national standard system for service e-invoices in Brazil.

Requirements for MEI Registration

To be eligible for MEI registration, small business owners must meet the following requirements:

  1. Be a Small Business Owner: You must be a small business owner with an annual revenue of up to R$ 81,000.
  2. Work in a Permitted Industry: Your business must operate in a permitted industry, which includes a wide range of activities such as retail, food service, and personal services.
  3. Be a Brazilian Citizen: You must be a Brazilian citizen or a legal resident of Brazil.
  4. Have No Employees: You cannot have any employees, including family members.

How to register for MEI

To register as an MEI in Brazil, follow these steps:

  1. Verify Eligibility: Verify that your business meets the requirements for MEI registration.
  2. Register Online: Register for MEI online through the MEI Portal or at a local government agency.
  3. Obtain a Business License: If your business requires a license, obtain the necessary license from your local government agency.
  4. Pay Monthly MEI Tax: Pay the monthly MEI tax, which is currently set at R$ 56. This tax covers social security and other benefits.
