What are the different types of China work visa?

China offers several types of work visas for foreigners who wish to work in the country.  The correct visa for the employee will depend on the circumstances of the respective company and employee. Below are the different types of China work visa:

  • Z Visa — this visa is the most commonly issued work visa for foreigners hired by a Chinese employer. It is valid for 30 days from the entry date and can be extended upon arrival. To obtain a Z visa, applicants must provide a passport with at least six months’ validity, a completed visa application form, a recent passport-sized photo, and a work permit issued by the Chinese government
  • M Visa — this visa is issued for non-commercial purposes, such as attending meetings, conducting inspections, or giving lectures. It is valid for 30 days from the entry date and can be extended upon arrival. To obtain an M visa, applicants must provide a passport with at least six months’ validity, a completed visa application form, and an invitation letter from the organization or individual they will visit in China
  • R Visa — the R visa is for high-level talent or experts invited to work in China for over 90 days. It is valid for up to five to ten years and is renewable. To obtain an R visa, applicants must provide a passport with at least six months’ validity, a completed visa application form, and a work permit issued by the Chinese government
  • F Visa — this is issued for cultural exchanges, visits, or non-commercial activities. It is valid for up to six months from the entry date and can be extended upon arrival. To obtain an F visa, applicants must provide a passport with at least six months’ validity, a completed visa application form, and an invitation letter from the organization or individual they will visit in China
  • X Visa — the X visa is for foreign nationals intending to study in China for more than six months. It is valid for up to 30 days from the entry date and can be extended upon arrival. To obtain an X visa, applicants must provide a passport with at least six months’ validity, a completed visa application form, and an admission letter issued by a Chinese school or university.
     

What is the process for applying for a work visa in China?

The China visa application process should proceed as follows:

  • Determine the type of visa required — for example, the Z visa is for long-term work, the S1 visa for the dependents of Z visa holders, and the R visa for “high-level” and experienced talent. To avoid delays it is important to choose the appropriate visa type
  • Check if you are candidate is eligible for the visa — each visa category has specific eligibility criteria that you must meet. For example, for a Z visa, you must have a valid job offer from a Chinese employer and a work permit issued by the Chinese government
  • Acquire the required documents — depending on the visa category you are applying for, you will need to provide various documents as part of your application. This may include proof of your qualifications, proof of your job offer, proof of your financial status and a valid passport
  • Complete the online application form — this includes uploading the required documents and pay the visa fee
  • Attend an interview — once the application is submitted, you may be required to attend an interview at the Chinese embassy or consulate in your country of residence. During the interview, the consular officer will ask questions to verify the information provided in the application form, and to ensure that the applicant meets the visa requirements
  • Prepare for relocation to China — if your visa is approved, you will need to prepare for the move. This may include finding accommodation, arranging for your belongings to be shipped, and making travel arrangements. Many find the use of a professional relocation service useful for these purposes.
  • Register with the Public Security Bureau —this is required within 30 days of entering China. You will need to provide your passport and visa, your work permit, and your accommodation registration (a form provided by your landlord or hotel).
