How to Get a Colombia Digital Nomad Visa: Requirements and Procedure

Key Takeaways

  • Over 50 countries now offer digital nomad visas, including Colombia
  • Colombia’s digital nomad visa was introduced in 2023
  • Digital nomad visas are not the same as traditional business and work visas
  • The digital nomad visa lets you stay in the country for up to two years.

A Colombia Digital Nomad Visa is a special visa that allows international remote workers and entrepreneurs to live and work for up to two years in Colombia.

Colombia has emerged as a popular destination for digital nomads due to its high-speed internet, affordable cost of living, and vibrant culture: Colombian cities like Medellin, Bogota, and Cartagena offer coworking spaces and coffee shops with reliable Wi-Fi, which are essential for remote work.

The cost of living in Colombia is also lower compared to many countries, allowing digital nomads to enjoy a comfortable lifestyle without breaking the bank. Moreover, Colombia’s time zone aligns well with North America, making it an attractive location for nomads working for U.S.-based companies.

Beyond the practicalities of work, Colombia offers a rich cultural experience and diverse landscapes that make it an exciting place to live. It is famous for its warm and welcoming people, diverse food, music, and vibrant festivals. For nature lovers, Colombia offers beautiful beaches, lush rainforests, and snow-capped mountains. It also has a favorable climate year-round, particularly in cities like Medellin, known as the “city of eternal spring”. With this blend of work convenience, cultural richness, and natural beauty, it’s easy to see why Colombia is a sought-after destination for digital nomads.

Here we  take a look at Colombia’s new digital nomad visa and explain what you need to do to apply for one.

Why Is the Colombia Digital Nomad Visa?

The Colombia digital nomad visa (Visa Nómadas digitales) is a type of visa targeted at freelancers and remote workers who have employers or clients based outside of the country. It does not permit you to start employment with a company based in Colombia (for more on this topic, see How to Hire Employees in Colombia).

This visa will permit you to remain in the country for up to two years and will give you a type of state identification known as a ‘Cedula de Extranjeria‘. This is a requirement for essential activities like renting property or setting up a cell phone contract in Colombia. To qualify for this visa you’ll need to demonstrate that you have a monthly income of at least $684, which is considerably lower than what is required by many other countries that offer this type of visa.

It’s important to be aware that a digital nomad visa is different to more traditional business and work visas: A business visa has a short validity similar to a tourist visa and allows you to temporarily enter a country to carry out business activities like meetings. A Colombia work visa is valid for a longer period, often years and allows you to start employment for a company in Colombia.

For some people, a work visa is the first step towards permanent residency or citizenship of the country they’re working in. The Colombian visa for digital nomads, by contrast, is a category of visitor’s visa. This means that you cannot obtain permanent residency with this visa.

The Colombia Digital Nomad Visa Process

How do I apply for a Colombia digital nomad visa?

It’s possible to apply for a Colombian digital nomad visa online but you can also make an appointment with your nearest Colombian embassy or consulate. You can also apply for this visa if you’ve already entered Colombia as a tourist. Getting a response takes around 10 business days.

To apply for the visa:

  • Complete the visa application form
  • Gather the supporting documents required
  • Submit your application and documents.

Which documents are required for a Colombia digital nomad visa?

You’ll need to submit some supporting documents when you apply for a Colombia digital nomad visa. It’s important to understand what is required – missing documents might mean that your application is delayed or rejected. A rejected visa application could affect your ability to apply for another Colombian visa in the future. It’s a good idea to contact your nearest Colombian embassy for clarification if you’re unsure about what documents you need to provide. You can submit written documents in either Spanish or English.

The documents you’ll need to submit are:

  • A photocopy of your passport photo ID page
  • A passport photo with a white background
  • A photocopy of the passport page showing your legal entry into Colombia, if applicable
  • A letter from your employer confirming your employment and salary
  • A copy of your employment contract
  • A motivational letter explaining your work if you’re an entrepreneur
  • Bank statements covering three months showing that you meet the minimum income requirements
  • Proof of health insurance.

Work remotely in Colombia — with the new digital nomad visa

Digital nomad visas can be a valuable tool to help you travel freely and spend more time in countries that you want to visit — there are currently more than 50 countries offering digital or remote work visas.

If you’re interested in experiencing Colombia whilst you work remotely, the Colombian digital nomad visa might be a good solution. It’s smart to think carefully about what your work and travel plans are, carry out thorough research into the visa options that are open to you, and to find out how to apply for a visa. This will help you to apply for the right category of visa so that you can make the most of the digital nomad lifestyle.

For support with the Colombia digital nomad process, foreign companies might consider the services of a Colombia Professional Employer Organization (Colombia PEO) or Colombia Employer of Record (EOR). These professional service companies specialise in all aspects of Colombia employment law, including digital nomad visas.
